Mike Bellamy specializes in large custom color tattoos.  Big Japanese bodysuits, backpiece and sleeve designs influenced me instantly.  I love doing my interpretations of traditional Japanese designs, color or black and grey.  I have a lot of fun riffing off American traditional and what I lovingly call 90’s style tattoos.  Big, bold and expressive!

I moved from Denver to New York in 1989 to attend Parsons School of Design for illustration.I began tattooing more than 30 years ago in the underground days of NYC, and the Tattoo Society meetings at CBGB’s Gallery.

“This was all before the shops of West 4th St., and the tattoo explosion nationwide. Long before before “Miami Ink”  and other television shows. I have worked at Crooklyn’s Cave, Huggy Bear Tattoo in Brooklyn, Inkline Studio.  Those were all considered “underground” since tattooing wasn’t legalized until 1997.   Legitimately I worked at Sacred Tattoo in Manhattan. In 1998, I started Triple X Tattoo with  Sean Vasquez and Richie Bulldog.  Since then I’ve changed the name to Red Rocket Tattoo, changed partners, moved to the corner and have been going strong and steady ever since.”
