WHY RODRIGO SAAVEDRA
20+ Years of Japanese Tattooing
Choosing a tattoo artist is about more than finding someone who can execute a design. It's about finding an artist with the experience, discipline, and respect for the craft to create a tattoo that will last a lifetime.
My name is Rodrigo Saavedra. I'm a Chilean tattoo artist with more than twenty years of professional experience, specializing in Japanese Traditional tattooing while maintaining a strong foundation in American Traditional tattooing.
My journey began in Chile with a formal apprenticeship between 2006 and 2009. Since then, I've dedicated my career to continually learning from the tattoo artists who came before me, believing that respect for tradition is one of the foundations of becoming a better tattooer.
Today I continue that journey at Red Rocket Tattoo in Midtown Manhattan, creating large-scale custom tattoos inspired by the traditions of Japanese tattooing.
A Foundation Built on Tradition
Tattooing is a lifelong education.
Throughout my career, I've worked alongside and learned from internationally respected tattoo artists, many of whom continue to inspire my work today.
Japanese tattooing is more than a visual style. It is a tradition built on history, symbolism, composition, and discipline. Every project deserves careful planning and a long-term commitment from both artist and client.
The most rewarding tattoos are those created through collaboration and mutual trust.
Specializing in Japanese Traditional Tattooing
For more than a decade, Japanese tattooing has been the primary focus of my work.
My specialties include:
- Japanese Traditional Tattoos
- Full Sleeves
- Backpieces
- Bodysuits
- Leg Sleeves
- Dragons
- Tigers
- Koi
- Peonies
- Chrysanthemums
- Hannya
- Samurai
- Traditional Japanese Symbolism
- American Traditional Tattoos
Every tattoo is designed to flow naturally with the body while remaining faithful to the principles that have defined Japanese tattooing for generations.
Respect for the Craft
One of the most important lessons I've learned is that great tattooing begins with respect.
Respect for the history.
Respect for the traditions.
Respect for the client.
Respect for the artwork.
My goal is never simply to create an attractive image, but to produce a tattoo with lasting artistic value—one that continues to look strong for decades while honoring the style from which it comes.
Tebori — Traditional Japanese Hand Tattooing
In addition to machine tattooing, I have studied Tebori, the traditional Japanese method of hand tattooing using bamboo handles and hand-held needles.
Tebori represents one of tattooing's oldest traditions and requires patience, discipline, and respect for Japanese culture.
Studying this technique has deepened my appreciation for the history of Japanese tattooing and continues to influence every project I create.
Large-Scale Custom Tattoo Projects
Japanese tattooing is often experienced as a journey rather than a single appointment.
Whether you're planning:
- A Full Sleeve
- A Full Leg Sleeve
- A Backpiece
- A Bodysuit
- Or a Multi-Session Japanese Project
I work closely with every client to develop a composition that complements their anatomy while respecting the traditions of Japanese tattooing.
Large projects require patience, consistency, and commitment—but the results can last a lifetime.
Why Clients Choose Rodrigo Saavedra
